Quick Answer

Is the Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan worth visiting?

Yes, and it is the single most impressive piece of Mamluk architecture in Cairo. Built between 1356 and 1363 as a mosque, four madrasas, a hospital and a mausoleum, it raised the scale of religious architecture in Egypt to a level nobody has matched since. The portal is the size of a small building, the courtyard could hold a crowd of thousands and the single original minaret still stands 84 metres above the old city. Give it two hours, and go up the minaret if the stairs are open.

Where: Midan Salah al-Din, opposite the Al-Rifai Mosque, a short walk south of the Cairo Citadel.
Pace: Two hours for the complex, a half day for the whole area around the Citadel and the Khan.
Experience: Mamluk monumental architecture, four madrasas, a medieval hospital, royal tombs and a minaret with a view to the end of the city.
Local tip: Stand in the middle of the courtyard before you look at anything else, and give your eyes a minute to adjust to the scale.

There is a moment in the courtyard of the Mosque of Sultan Hassan when visitors stop talking. It is not a dramatic instant. It is quiet, and it usually happens after the door, when the narrow entrance releases you into a space that the eye cannot take in at once. The courtyard is larger than the street you came from. The portal you passed under is forty metres tall and you are now standing beside it, looking up. A mosque designed to be modest about nothing at all.

This is the great Mamluk statement in Cairo, built in the 1350s by Sultan Hasan, and it was controversial from the day it opened. A fifteenth-century visitor wrote that there was nothing in the whole world to compare with it, and other sources complained that a ruler should not build a palace and call it a house of God. Both reactions were right. The complex was intended to display the authority of the sultan and the reach of his learning, and it was built in a hurry, and the cracks started showing within a generation.

It is also the best single explanation of what Mamluk Cairo was. If you are short on time, this is the building to spend it in. Our Cairo tour pages explain how I sequence a first day in the city, and the Cairo historic mosques guide covers the other buildings you can walk to from the same square.

Sultan Hassan in brief

Sultan Hasan, or Sultan Hasan ibn al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun, was the most powerful ruler of the Bahri Mamluk dynasty in Egypt and Syria. He came to the throne as a child of seven after his father al-Nasir Muhammad died in 1347, was deposed within a year, and returned to power in 1354, staying on the throne until 1361. His reign was spent managing a succession crisis, and the building that bears his name was one of the ways he answered it.

The essentials:

Commissioned in 1356 and substantially complete by 1363, supervised by the emir Muhammad ibn Baylik al-Muhsini.
A complex containing a congregational mosque, four madrasas, a bimaristan, a sabil-kuttab and two mausoleums.
Four madrasas, one for each of the Sunni legal schools: Hanafi, Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali.
Four minarets planned, three built, one original surviving today at 84 metres.
The mausoleum dome collapsed in 1371, was rebuilt under the sultan al-Nasir Qaitbay, and collapsed again in 1504.
Later used as a fortress against the Citadel, then as barracks, and opened as a museum in 1927.

One clarification before the details. Sultan Hassan is not a tomb in the way that you walk into a chamber and look at a coffin. His mausoleum is one element of a much larger institution, and the whole ensemble was designed to work together: teaching, medical care, drinking water, prayer and burial, funded in one place and controlled by one office. Understanding that is the key to reading the building.

The sultan and his city

When Sultan Hassan decided to build, he was intervening in something already broken. The Mamluks had no dynasty of their own. The sultans of Egypt were military men, often of uncertain origin, elevated by their military peers, and their children were the first to be killed when the next general seized power. That cycle had produced a generation of men who grew up in the harem of a sultan, were unsure of their parentage and their future, and ended up ruling an empire.

The madrasa system was the answer. It educated the sons of the Mamluk elite, in the Sunni legal schools their fathers respected, and it attached the educational institution directly to the person of the sultan, so that his patronage and their advancement were the same arrangement. Sultan Hassan was not building a school; he was building the mechanism that made his dynasty legitimate to the people who could end it. That is why there are four madrasas here, and why the scale is so deliberate.

What the sultan wanted it to say

The building speaks in a single voice. The enormous scale, the hard grey stone, the sharp geometry of the arcades and the height of the minarets are not decoration but argument. This was a man telling the military aristocracy of Egypt that scholarship and sovereignty belonged to him. A fifteenth-century observer noted that the complex was so grand that other rulers were taking from it, and that its bimaristan was known throughout the Islamic world as the finest hospital of the period.

The complex was also, deliberately, a public statement at the centre of the city rather than a private retreat. It stood on open ground on the site of earlier religious buildings, including a madrasa and a hospital of the Ayyubid sultan al-Salih Tala'i, whose remains were incorporated into the new work. Building over a predecessor in the capital was a way of announcing that the Mamluk order now held the centre.

What the complex contained

The Sultan Hassan complex was not a single building but a small institution, and it is worth taking the components one at a time, because each tells you what the sultan wanted to control and how.

The congregational mosque

The main mosque occupies the northern part of the site, entered through the great portal from the south. It has a large courtyard, arcades on three sides, and a deep prayer hall on the fourth with a triple-domed sanctuary at the qibla end. The triple dome over the sanctuary, which had already been used at Al-Hakim two and a half centuries earlier, was here larger and more complex, and the shape would be copied for another two hundred years.

The four madrasas

Each of the four legal schools was given its own teaching space, and the layout follows the theology. The Shafi'i madrasa, generally regarded as the senior school of the age, is given the grandest position: a monumental iwan, an open vaulted hall with a seat for the teacher, facing the entrance. The Hanafi madrasa is in the northwest corner, the Maliki in the northeast, and the Hanbali in the southwest, with the Hanafi iwan placed so that it looks out along the axis of the complex towards the qibla and the Kaaba.

Each madrasa had its own students, its own teaching rooms and its own charitable provision, and each was endowed. The arrangement meant that a Mamluk boy arriving at the complex was placed in the school of his father's tradition, and that the sultan was the one providing it. It is an early form of an institution that looks, from a distance, surprisingly like a modern university.

Madrasa	Position in the complex	What it tells you
Shafi'i	The monumental iwan on the qibla side	Given the most prominent position, reflecting its standing as the senior school of the period.
Hanafi	Northwest corner, with an iwan	Its iwan looks along the axis of the complex towards the qibla and the Kaaba.
Maliki	Northeast corner	A quieter position for a school with a smaller following among the Mamluk elite.
Hanbali	Southwest corner	The strictest of the four schools, and the one with the fewest students in Cairo at this date.

The bimaristan

On the eastern side of the site was the bimaristan, a hospital with a medical school attached, funded by the sultan and run by physicians paid from the endowment. It offered free treatment, including surgery, and teaching in medicine, and it is the part of the complex with the best documented record of its own. Large hospitals of this kind were rare and expensive, and having one inside a religious endowment was genuinely unusual. It is also the origin of the name bimaristan, from the Persian place of sickness, and it survives in the name of the Bab al-Bimaristan, the hospital gate that stood nearby.

The sabil-kuttab and the two mausoleums

On the south side was a sabil, a covered drinking fountain for the public, with a kuttab for small children learning the Quran, the standard charitable pairing of the period. And the sultan buried himself here. His own mausoleum, a domed chamber within the complex, holds his tomb. Nearby stands the separate mausoleum built for his sons, the Turbat al-Awlad, a domed structure with its own carved decoration and its own marble cenotaphs.

The great portal

The south facade of the mosque is the single most impressive piece of Mamluk architecture in Cairo, and the building's name in Arabic, the mosque of Sultan Hassan, is usually said by guides to mean the mosque of the janissaries. The facade is organised around a single deep recess, a pishtaq, rising roughly forty metres to the top of the portal, flanked by the two minarets that survive in reconstructed form today.

What makes it work is the recess itself. The entry bay is deeply sunk into the wall, so the portal reads as a hollow rather than a projection, and the surface is covered in an uninterrupted field of carved stone. Above the entrance is a muqarnas hood, a stalactite vault in three rows, which was the standard device for turning a square bay into a dome and the standard display of the mason's skill. The two flanking recesses, one for each minaret, repeat the pattern at a smaller scale, and the whole facade reads as a single piece of geometry.

The portal was also a machine for controlling people. It is a deep tunnel of a space with a doorway at the back, and you pass through it to reach the courtyard. Everything about its proportions is designed to make a visitor feel small and to make the courtyard beyond feel enormous.

The courtyard and the arcades

Step through the portal and the courtyard opens out, roughly square and one of the largest of any mosque in Cairo. The arcades on three sides are two storeys high, with pointed arches on the lower level and smaller openings above, and they are faced in the same dressed stone as the portal but with much less carving. The intention is contrast: the portal shouts, the courtyard whispers.

Look up when you are inside. The courtyard is roofed over parts of the arcades and open to the sky, and the geometry of shadow changes across the morning in a way that no photograph quite catches. The two-storey arrangement was also practical. The upper level gave the madrasas their teaching rooms, looking down into the courtyard, so the students could look down into the courtyard and hear the Friday sermon at the same time.

On the west side, the arcade gives access to the mausoleum and to the structures at the rear, and on the north the prayer hall rises behind a screen of arches. The sense of enclosure is deliberate, and it is one of the clearest examples in Cairo of a building designed as a piece of urban theatre, with the street outside and the institution inside.

The domes

The most famous part of the skyline, the great dome over the sultan's mausoleum, is the one you are least able to see properly, because the mausoleum sits behind the mosque and the dome is now a modern reconstruction. The original collapsed in 1371, only eight years after the complex opened, which was a bitter comment on the quality of the build. It was rebuilt at enormous expense under the sultan al-Nasir Qaitbay between 1471 and 1477, with a new drum and new brickwork, and that dome in turn fell in 1504.

Both times the failure was structural rather than decorative. A dome of this size, in brick, on a square drum, needed a ring of tension and a lot of care, and the Mamluk builders of the 1350s were working at the limit of what could be achieved in the material. The Qaitbay rebuild is generally considered the better engineering, and its setting of ribs and windows around the drum is one of the finest things in Cairo. The dome standing today was reconstructed again in the twentieth century from the surviving masonry and the earlier drawings.

The triple domes over the sanctuary, lower and smaller, are in better condition, and from the courtyard they are the ones that read clearly. Look for the ribs on the inside of each, and for the way the light comes down through them onto the mihrab wall.

The minarets: four planned, one original

The Sultan Hassan minarets are the clearest lesson in Mamluk architecture, because you can count the losses. Four were planned, set at the corners of the mosque and the mausoleum. Three were built. Two of them came down. One survives in its original form.

The first collapse was in 1361, only five years after the complex opened, and it was catastrophic. The fallen tower killed a large number of people, with the figure usually given at around three hundred, most of them children studying at the kuttab on the south side of the complex. The accounts are clear that the collapse was sudden and that the crowd was close to the tower when it fell. A second minaret came down in 1671. The single survivor stands at the southeastern corner of the mausoleum and rises to about 84 metres, which made it the tallest in Cairo for much of the Mamluk period and remains one of the tallest structures in the city.

The two minarets that flank the portal today are twentieth-century reconstructions, built in 1912 to the original design and profile. The difference between them and the survivor is instructive: the original has the tall, slender, three-stage shaft with a balcony ring and a muqarnas crown, and it is the model that was copied across Cairo and, through Cairo, throughout the eastern Islamic world.

Materials and craftsmanship

Mamluk buildings of this class used a restricted palette on purpose. The walls are dressed limestone, or granite in the structural parts, with marble used sparingly at thresholds and columns. Almost all of the carved decoration is on the portal, where the masons ran out of stone and were permitted to substitute carved stucco for carved stone in the inscriptions, which is why the Kufic bands along the portal appear to be a different material from the frames around them.

Look closely at the carved stone and you will find the marks of the workshop. The arabesques are cut with a blade, deeply, in undercut relief, and the quality varies across the facade, which tells you about the pace of the build and about which masons were working on which part of it. The upper courses of the minaret and the dome drums show both the wear of seven centuries and the crispness of the repairs.

The one thing you should not do is judge the complex by the portal alone. The grandeur is the advertisement, but the working parts, the arcades, the madrasa halls, the bimaristan and the tomb chambers, are where the building tells you what it was for.

Decline, collapse and restoration

The building was finished in a hurry and it showed. Work started in 1356 under the first of two reigns interrupted by the sultan's deposition, and the complex was complete by 1363. The first dome fell in 1371 and the first minaret in 1361, and the repairs were paid for by the endowment rather than by the sultan, which tells you something about how quickly the political protection drained away.

By the Ottoman period the complex was being used as a military resource. It served as a fortress from which the Mamluk emirs could attack the Citadel, and later as a barracks for Ottoman troops and then for French forces during the occupation. The building that had been a school, a hospital and a mausoleum was used as a place of arms for several centuries, which explains the damage to the arcades, the loss of inscriptions and the general stripping that you can still see on the lower walls.

It was opened as a museum in 1927, and the twentieth and twenty-first centuries have been a long, careful campaign of consolidation. The minaret that survived was repaired and its interiors opened to visitors, and the dome was reconstructed. What you see now is the accumulated result: a genuinely medieval structure with a lot of modern work in it, which is the honest condition of almost every important building in Cairo and one of the reasons they are worth arguing about.

Local tip: climb the minaret
The surviving minaret at the southeastern corner of the mausoleum can be climbed, and it is the best view in the old city. You go up a spiral of stairs inside the shaft and step out onto the balcony with the whole of Fatimid and Mamluk Cairo beneath you, the Citadel on one side and the minarets of Al-Rifai and Ibn Tulun on the other. It is not a technical climb, but it is narrow, hot and uneven, so wear something with a good grip and go in the morning.

The mausoleums and the royal tombs

Sultan Hassan was buried in his own complex, in a domed chamber in the mausoleum building behind the mosque. His tomb is a marble cenotaph with a carved wooden-style canopy inlaid with mother-of-pearl, and above it the Quranic verses that begin the sections of the surah on the mercy of God. The chamber is one of the most affecting rooms in Cairo, and the decoration was already old-fashioned by the time of the burial in 1363.

His sons were buried next door in the Turbat al-Awlad, the Mausoleum of the Sons of Sultan Hassan, which is a separate building with its own carved marble and a series of cenotaphs. For the Mamluk elite the burial had to be near the family and near the institution, and the arrangement here is that of a dynasty with a plan: the father at the centre, the children beside him, the endowment to provide for them, and the teaching rooms to keep the name in public memory.

The Al-Rifai complex opposite holds the royal tombs of the modern dynasty, which is worth knowing before you cross the square, since the contrast is the point of the place. King Farouk, King Fuad, Queen Nazli and other members of the family lie in the Ottoman-style mausoleum built in the late nineteenth century.

Al-Rifai across the square

Al-Rifai Mosque was begun in 1869 and completed in 1912, and it was built to the design of the architect Hussein Pasha Fahmi for the Khedive Isma'il, as a memorial to his son Tawfik. Its six minarets and two domes are deliberately Ottoman in profile, and it was intended as the grandest building in the city.

It was also an extraordinary technical gamble. European materials, imported fittings and modern cement were used at a scale the local builders had no experience of, and the structure has spent a century dealing with the consequences. The result is a building that looks magnificent and photographs beautifully, and which makes the opposite point of the Sultan Hassan complex perfectly: two great mosques, two centuries apart, two ways of spending money on a city's skyline.

Standing in the square between them is one of the best free lessons in architecture Cairo offers. The Mamluk mosque is heavier, older and more severe. The Ottoman one is taller, lighter and more decorative. Both are the result of a ruler trying to say something about legitimacy with stone.

Visiting: hours, tickets and timings

The complex is part of the Historic Cairo area ticket, and it is one of the places where that ticket earns its keep. Allow two hours, and more if you climb the minaret. Here is what I budget with, and what I would tell a friend to expect.

Item	Typical figure	Note
Historic Cairo area ticket	About EGP 220 for foreign adults, roughly EGP 110 for students	Egyptian nationals pay a much smaller amount, around EGP 20. Tariffs change, so confirm on arrival.
Minaret climb	Small charge, often a few tens of EGP	Access is restricted at times, so ask at the entrance before you plan around it.
Opening hours	Typically around 9 in the morning to 6 in the evening	Friday mornings and Ramadan bring different arrangements.
Time needed	2 hours for the complex, half a day for the square and the Citadel	Include the mausoleums and the minaret climb in your estimate.
Guided visit	Usually EGP 300 to 500 per group or hour	Worth it here more than anywhere else in Cairo, because the plan only makes sense when it is explained.

The museum side of the site, with objects from the madrasa and the bimaristan, is small and can be combined with the mosque itself in the same visit. Photography is generally allowed inside the complex, but the mausoleum chambers are treated with more respect, and a guide will tell you where the flash is unwelcome.

How to reach it and what to pair it with

The complex stands on Midan Salah al-Din, which is one of the most open and pleasant spaces in Cairo, with the Citadel rising above it and the Al-Rifai Mosque opposite. It is a fifteen-minute walk from the closest metro station on Line 1, and a short taxi ride from downtown, Zamalek or the Nile Corniche. For lunch afterwards, the area around the square has some of the best traditional food in the city within a few streets.

The sequence I recommend puts the mosque late in the day rather than early. Go up the Citadel in the morning, walk down through the Bab al-Nasr area and the Mamluk street, reach the complex around midday when the arcades are cool and shaded, and spend two hours inside with almost no crowd. Then cross the square to Al-Rifai, and finish with tea on the square as the light goes.

Walking on foot from here, the buildings that make the story continue are the Mosque of Ibn Tulun and the Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad, the Mosque of al-Aqmar and the Fatimid street, and the Khan el-Khalili beyond. Our Islamic Cairo walking guide sets out that route, and the Mosque of Ibn Tulun guide covers the building that the Mamluk masters were building on top of.

Insider tips

Things I tell every group. First, enter through the portal and then turn round and look at it from inside the courtyard, because that is the only view that explains the design. Second, do not photograph the minaret from the square; climb it, because the climb is the point. Third, stand in the north-west corner of the courtyard and look back at the qibla wall, and you will see the scale of the prayer hall relative to a person. Fourth, read the Kufic inscriptions on the portal and remember that the carved stucco sections were a workaround, so the mason who worked there was doing something slightly different.

And fifth, if you can, come back at dusk. The complex is lit from below at night and the silhouette of the surviving minaret against a dark sky is one of the great images of Cairo. If you want that arranged, or the whole day built around it, send us your dates through the free itinerary planner, or look at the full tour list for the guided versions we run from Giza.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I spend at the Mosque of Sultan Hassan?

Two hours is a good visit: the portal, the courtyard, the prayer hall, the four madrasas, the mausoleums and the minaret climb. Ninety minutes is enough if you skip the minaret and read quickly. Half a day is right if you include the square, Al-Rifai opposite and the Citadel above. Do not try to do it in forty minutes, because the plan is complicated and you will end up looking at a wall.

Why did the minarets and dome of Sultan Hassan collapse?

Because the building was pushed hard and built at the limit of what could be achieved in brick and stone, and because the quality control of the 1350s was not what it should have been. One minaret fell in 1361, killing roughly three hundred people, most of them children at the kuttab. The mausoleum dome fell in 1371, was rebuilt by the sultan al-Nasir Qaitbay between 1471 and 1477, and fell again in 1504. The dome standing today is a modern reconstruction and the surviving minaret is the only original one.

What are the four madrasas inside the complex?

They are the teaching institutions for the four Sunni schools of law: Hanafi, Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali, one for each, founded by the sultan in the 1350s to educate the sons of the Mamluk elite. The Shafi'i school was given the most prominent position, a monumental iwan on the qibla side, and the Hanafi iwan looks along the axis of the complex towards Mecca. Each school had its own endowment, its own students and its own charitable provision.

Can you climb the minaret at Sultan Hassan?

Yes, the original minaret at the southeastern corner of the mausoleum can be climbed, and it is one of the best views in Cairo. There is a small charge and access is sometimes restricted, so ask at the entrance before you build the visit around it. The stairs are narrow, spiral inside the shaft and uneven, so wear shoes with a good grip and take water. Two towers flanking the main portal are twentieth-century reconstructions from 1912.

Is Sultan Hassan a tomb, and is the mausoleum open to visitors?

The mausoleum is one part of a much larger complex, and it is open. Sultan Hassan is buried in a domed chamber behind the mosque, in a marble cenotaph with mother-of-pearl inlay, and his sons are buried in the separate Mausoleum of the Sons of Sultan Hassan beside it. Photography in the tomb chambers is more restrained than elsewhere in the complex, and a guide will advise you.

What was the bimaristan in the Sultan Hassan complex?

A hospital with a medical school attached, financed by the sultan's endowment and run by paid physicians, offering free treatment including surgery. Hospitals of this size were rare and expensive anywhere in the Islamic world in the fourteenth century, and placing one inside a religious endowment was unusual. The word bimaristan comes from the Persian for a place of sickness, and it is the origin of the name Bab al-Bimaristan, the hospital gate that stood near the complex.

Is the Mosque of Sultan Hassan the same as Al-Rifai Mosque?

No, they are two different buildings on opposite sides of Midan Salah al-Din. Sultan Hassan is the Mamluk complex of the 1350s to 1363, built by Sultan Hasan. Al-Rifai was begun in 1869 and completed in 1912 to the design of Hussein Pasha Fahmi, and it holds the royal tombs of the modern dynasty. Visiting both is the easiest way to compare fourteenth-century Mamluk Cairo with nineteenth-century Khedival Cairo.

Is Al-Hakim Mosque better or more impressive than Sultan Hassan?

They are different buildings doing different things. Al-Hakim is earlier, smaller and far more decorated, with the oldest carved stucco in Cairo and the earliest square-based minarets in Egypt. Sultan Hassan is the larger and more severe statement, with a scale and a boldness that Al-Hakim does not attempt. If you like carved ornament, go to Al-Hakim; if you like mass, geometry and institutional power, come here.

How do I get to the Mosque of Sultan Hassan?

It stands on Midan Salah al-Din, a fifteen-minute walk from the closest Line 1 metro station, and a short taxi ride from downtown or Zamalek. It is best combined with the Cairo Citadel, which overlooks the square, and with a walk down through the Mamluk city. If you want the visit timed around the light or around lunch, tell us your dates through the free itinerary planner and we will build the day around it.

How busy is it, and when should I go?

Quite busy in the late morning, when coaches arrive, and quiet after about two o'clock. The courtyard is shaded and cooler in the middle of the day, which is another argument for a midday visit. Friday mornings are given over to worshippers. If you want the portal empty and the light raking across it, arrive at opening, or come back for the evening when the complex is lit from below.

What should I photograph here?

The portal from the courtyard, the minaret from the square, the courtyard arcades with the light moving across them, the triple domes over the sanctuary, and the carved marble cenotaphs in the mausoleum. What does not photograph is the scale, which is why the minaret climb matters. A wide lens makes the portal work, and a polariser helps with the stonework, though it needs permission and a tripod.

Is the Mosque of Sultan Hassan included in the Historic Cairo ticket?

Yes, it is covered by the area ticket for Historic Cairo, which is around EGP 220 for foreign adults and around EGP 20 for Egyptian nationals, with reduced student rates, though tariffs change and should be confirmed at the entrance. The minaret climb may carry a small separate charge. The ticket also covers the other major monuments in the district, including Al-Hakim and Ibn Tulun.

Can I combine the mosque with the pyramids in one day?

You can, but I would not recommend it. The pyramids and Saqqara deserve a cool early morning and the mosque deserves a shaded midday, and putting them in the same day means spending two hours in traffic. Better to do the pyramids and Saqqara first, the old city the next day, and treat the Citadel, the square and Al-Rifai as the afternoon. See our Cairo historic mosques guide for the rest of the route.
